The Black Hills are known as the Holy Mountains by the Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne Indians. Local Sioux refer to them as the Paha Sapa, the Black Mountains, the heart of Turtle Island, a place where they came to get a vision and refresh their dreams and pray for all our relations. They are older than the Rocky Mountains, and are home to many species of wildlife, including eagles, American Elk, buffalo, prarie dogs, porcupines, white tail deer and mule deer. The area is perfect for walking, riding, mountain-biking, fishing, hunting or just relaxing. There are many vacation possibilities in the surrounding area, from hot air balloon and helicopter rides to visiting the Mammoth Site at Hot Springs. During August, a motorcycle rally takes place in Sturgis in the heart of the Black Hills. Many Harley Davidson owners from all over the USA, Canada and Europe bring their beautifully restored bikes to Sturgis, to share their passion for biking with others of a similar bend. The rally hosts numerous events, including rock concerts by bands like Lynard Skynard, ZZ Top, Johnny Lang and much more . For big game viewing, nothing tops the great buffalo herds of Custer State Park or Wind Cave National Park. Mount Rushmore with its historical carvings of the four Presidents, offer a contrasting view to the ongoing creation of the Crazy Horse Monument. See the vast prairie expand as you come down from the Black Hills to Rapid City. The contrast from the densely forested mountains to the grass covered plains is truly breathtaking.
